Fruit salsa doesn’t have to be sweet. This hot cherry salsa combines the sweet flavor of cherries with hot peppers and onions, giving it a sweet and savory kick with every bite. Perfect when served with chips, or serve alongside grilled pork chops!

Nothing says summer quite like cherries!  They’ve been popping up everywhere around here the past few weeks and my family hasn’t been able to get enough of them.  Sweet and juicy, these babies are in their prime right now and are great for pies, cakes, or just eating straight from the bowl.

But, as much as I love cherries and the many wonderful delicacies that can be made from them, anyone who knows me knows I favor salty over sweet any day of the week.

Which is why when we found ourselves at the Broomfield Farmer’s Market this past Tuesday and I saw the filled-to-the-brim baskets of these delicious tart cherries, I started dreaming of pairing them up with all the things you would never think of putting with cherries.  But you should. You really, really should.

These cherries are from Wag’s World Orchards, which is located in Eckert CO, just below the Grand Mesa. Wag’s World Orchards is a family farm that has been in business since 1994 and grows all types of fruits and vegetables, in addition to making honey and other jams, and fillings.

Because they are located in the valley of the Grand Mesa, their growing conditions are ideal as the climate is more temperate for fruit and vegetable growing.  They are at many of the Colorado farmers markets each week from May to October, or you can visit their farm stand in Eckert, CO.

This fruit salsa is gorgeous when it is assembled, and it couldn’t be easier to throw it together.  The sweetness of the cherries is countered with the bite of the jalapeno and onions, and the cilantro brings a freshness that makes this your next summer go-to side.  How do you serve hot cherry salsa? It’s great with chips, but would also be a wonderful addition to grilled pork.
