Why I Love This Recipe
What's not to love about this delicious flavor combo? There's a reason why so many people flock to this sauce.
- Roasted garlic. If you've never tasted roasted garlic, you're in for a treat. I love making roasted garlic as it's own dip (see this recipe for Roasted Elephant Garlic here!). Roasting the garlic deepens the flavor, reduces any bitterness, and produces an absolutely delicious sort of garlic paste that works beautifully in this sauce.
- Simple ingredients. Don't get me wrong - I love the convenience of the grocery store-bought sauce and have used it many times. But if time permits, this copycat recipe is worth making at home, not only because of the fresh flavor but because you can control the ingredients you use. No strange ingredients that you can't pronounce!
- Versatile. This sauce is well-known for its use in parmesan garlic wings or stirring into pasta, but you can use it in a ton of other ways - as a dipping sauce for fries, as a pizza sauce, as a chicken marinade, brushed onto garlic knots - it goes with everything!
Key Ingredients
Just a few simple ingredients are needed for this easy sauce
- Roasted garlic. This is the star of the garlic-parmesan sauce, providing a robust garlic flavor that is both rich and subtle.
- Parmesan cheese. Adds a nutty and salty flavor that pairs perfectly with the amazing garlic flavor.
- Mayonnaise. Mayo provides a great base for this creamy garlic sauce.
- Fresh lemon juice. A squeeze of lemon adds some acidity and balances the garlic/parmesan flavors.
- Italian seasoning & red pepper flakes. The Italian seasoning adds a hint of herbiness to the sauce and the red pepper flakes add just a touch of spice.
How To Make Garlic Parmesan Sauce
Creating this sauce is as easy as it gets. Follow the simple steps below:
- Roast your garlic. If you've never done this before, it's as easy as can be. Here's a full guide, but all you really need to do is chop the top of the head of garlic, place it in some foil, pour a tablespoon of olive oil over the top, seal up your package, and then roast it in the oven at 400 degrees for about 45 minutes. Check on it at the 35-minute mark to make sure it's not overcooking - you want the cloves to be nice and soft. They should squeeze out of the head easily once fully roasted.
- Blend. Add the garlic, grated Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, lemon juice, olive oil, and seasonings to a blender or food processor. Blend at low speed until the sauce is smooth and creamy.
- Store. Store your garlic Parmesan cream sauce in an airtight container in the fridge, and it's ready to enhance any meal for up to two weeks. (I like to use a small mason jar.)
Variations And Substitutions
- Make it lighter. Not a fan of Mayo? Swap the mayonnaise for Greek yogurt or sour cream for a tangier taste.
- Try a different cheese. Parmesan is the classic for this savory sauce, but you could try other aged cheeses, such as Asiago cheese or Pecorino.
- Make it spicy. For a spicy kick, increase the amount of red pepper flakes, or add a dash of hot sauce. (Note - if you don't want any spice, you can also omit the red pepper flakes altogether.)
Frequently Asked Questions
You can, but know that fresh garlic will give a sharper, more pronounced garlic flavor, and may make the sauce slightly bitter. For the best flavor, I'd recommend roasting the garlic.
Yes, to make this dairy-free use vegan mayonnaise and a plant-based Parmesan alternative.
How To Use Garlic Parmesan Sauce
This versatile sauce can be incorporated into so many dishes. Here are a few of my favorite ways to use it:
- Dip. As a dipping sauce for vegetables, chips, or bread.
- Pizza. Drizzled over pizza or white pizza for a garlicky twist.
- Wings. As a coating for a big batch of garlic parmesan chicken wings.
- Pasta. Mixed into Garlic Parmesan Chicken Pasta or used as a base for a creamy garlic pasta sauce.
- Marinade. Use it as a marinade for chicken breasts.
