This Easy Homemade Roasted Garlic Butter Seasoning is perfect for making a delicious compound butter. It's a delicious accompaniment for red meat, seafood, or a big loaf of crusty bread.

cutting board with garlic butter and sliced bread.

You guys know I'm crazy about garlic. I use it in so many recipes, from this Chicken and Shrimp Stir Fry With Garlic Ginger Sauce, To Soy Garlic Chicken Wings, and even Crescent Roll Garlic Knots. I love the great flavor it adds and the extra spice it adds to dishes.

If you're a garlic lover too, you're going to love this garlic butter recipe. Unlike a lot of other recipes, this one uses fresh garlic that's been roasted to a caramel-y perfection in the oven, then combines it with fresh herbs and creamy butter.

The result is a delicious spread that's the perfect choice for not just garlic bread, but loads of other dishes too. Why use store-bought garlic butter seasoning when you can easily make a much better-tasting version at home?

    Why This Recipe Works

    • Better than store-bought. The secret to this garlic butter seasoning lies in the perfect combination of fresh ingredients. Unlike store-bought alternatives loaded with preservatives, this homemade version offers fresh, natural flavors.
    • Roasting is best. Many people use raw garlic in their compound garlic butter, but I find that roasting the garlic gives the garlic butter a much better flavor. Roasting garlic not only mellows its intensity but also adds a subtle sweetness, creating a harmonious balance.
    • Fresh herbs. The addition of sea salt, parsley, thyme, rosemary, and lemon zest gives this garlic butter a fresh flavor that's the perfect complement to many dishes.
    • Easy. This is a super easy recipe to make, and it makes enough that you'll be able to use it across many dishes.

    Ingredients

Just a few simple ingredients make this recipe shine.

ingredients for roasted garlic butter seasoning on countertop.
    1. Unsalted butter. Use high-quality butter for the best results. Room-temperature butter ensures easy mixing and a creamy texture.
    2. Roasted garlic. The secret to achieving the best garlic flavor! Learn how to make roasted garlic here. Roasting the garlic gives it a soft, caramelized mellow flavor that pairs perfectly with the creamy butter.
    3. Sea salt. Enhances the flavors and adds the perfect amount of seasoning.
    4. Fresh Herbs: A blend of chopped parsley, thyme, and rosemary provides fragrant and earthy notes.
    5. Lemon Zest: The citrusy brightness cuts through the richness, adding a zing to the seasoning.

How To Make Roasted Garlic Butter Seasoning

    1. Roast the garlic. Start by roasting your garlic in the oven. If you've never done this before, I have step-by-step instructions for roasting garlic here. All you'll need is a small pan, some foil, the garlic, and some olive oil. Roast a full head of garlic cloves and mash them until soft and creamy.

    1. Mix. Mix the garlic butter herb combination until it's well combined and the ingredients are evenly distributed.
    2. Store. This recipe makes a fair amount so you'll be able to experiment with it in all sorts of dishes. Store the garlic butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month or freeze for up to 3 months.

    Variations And Substitutions

    • Use raw garlic. I personally think roasting the garlic is what makes this so delicious, but if you don't have the time or don't want to mess with it, you can use raw garlic. Just mince it well so that it's not too overpowering.
    • Use garlic powder and Italian seasoning. If you don't want to mess with fresh garlic and herbs, you can always substitute a  teaspoon of garlic powder plus a teaspoon of Italian seasoning to make a dried garlic butter seasoning blend.
    • Add some cheese. Toss in some freshly grated Parmesan cheese for some extra flavor.
    • Add some spice. Add a pinch of paprika or crushed red pepper flakes for an extra kick.
    • Make it a sauce. I love this as a condiment or spread, but you can melt it and use it as a sauce for various meat or seafood dishes.
    • Make it pretty! For a nice presentation, you can shape the butter into a log, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes until the butter has hardened slightly. Then roll the butter in additional herbs and slice it. This looks great on the table if you're serving a fancy dinner!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use dehydrated garlic and onion instead of fresh?

While fresh ingredients provide the best flavor, you can use dehydrated garlic and onion in a pinch. Adjust quantities to taste.

How long does the seasoning last?

Stored properly, it can last up to 1 month in the refrigerator or 3 months in the freezer.

    Can I use salted butter?

It's better to use unsalted butter to control the saltiness of the seasoning.

Ways To Use Homemade Garlic Butter

Garlic butter is an incredibly versatile seasoning. Here are just a few ways you can add this buttery garlic flavor to your favorite recipes.

    1. Garlic bread. My favorite way to use it!  Use the garlic butter as a simple spread for bread, or slice a baguette length-wise, spread the garlic butter across the middle, wrap it in foil, and heat at 350 in the oven for about 5 minutes for heavenly garlic bread.
    2. Pizza crust. Brush on pizza crust for a buttery, garlicky kick.
    3. French fries. Toss hot fries in garlic butter seasoning for a flavorful twist.
    4. Seafood dishes. Drizzle the garlic butter over fresh seafood before serving. Garlic butter shrimp, salmon, or lobster are especially delicious.
    5. On meat. Garlic butter is amazing on a piece of meat. Top grilled steak or roasted meat with a dollop for added flavor.
    6. Pasta. Simple garlic butter noodles are a favorite at our house.

This delicious garlic butter is the best way to add that delicious buttery garlic flavor to your meals and is so easy to make at home.
