    Why This Recipe Works

    • Simple ingredients. The beauty of this classic meatloaf glaze lies in its simplicity and perfect balance of flavors. The combination of ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and aromatic spices creates a tangy-sweet glaze that adds extra moisture to your meatloaf recipe and makes it taste amazing.
    • Easy addition. This glaze is simple to whip up while your meatloaf bakes - just toss all the ingredients into a bowl and whisk well. Adding the glaze towards the end of the cooking time ensures that it doesn't burn while allowing it to meld with the meatloaf for maximum flavor impact. The brown sugar caramelizes beautifully during baking, creating a deliciously sticky exterior that's irresistible.
    • Delicious. There's just something about adding a delicious, sweet and tangy sauce to the top of the meatloaf. It makes your meatloaf taste a million times better, creates an incredibly juicy meatloaf, and adds the best flavor to an already amazing dish.

    Key Ingredients

One of the best parts of this delicious meatloaf glaze is that you probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry. Here are the main ingredients you'll need:

ingredients for meatloaf glaze on countertop.
    • Ketchup. Provides the base for the classic glaze, adding a rich tomato flavor and a hint of sweetness.
    • Brown sugar. Adds sweetness and helps to caramelize the glaze, creating a beautiful golden crust on the meatloaf once it has baked.
    • White vinegar. Adds a bit of tang to this sweet sauce.
    • Worcestershire sauce. Contributes depth of flavor and a subtle umami kick to the glaze.
    • Spices. Garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper give the glaze a savory undertone and help balance out the sweetness of the brown sugar.

How To Make A Classic Meatloaf Glaze

Making this meatloaf sauce recipe is a breeze - you'll have it ready in less than 5 minutes!

    1. Combine ingredients. In a small bowl, combine ¾ cup of ketchup, 1 ½ teaspoons of white vinegar, 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, 2 ½ teaspoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, ½ teaspoon of onion powder, and ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper.

    1. Whisk. Whisk everything together until it's well combined. Make sure that the brown sugar is fully dissolved.

    1. Rest. Allow the meatloaf to rest for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

    Variations And Substitutions

    • Make it sweeter. For a sweeter glaze, you can increase the amount of brown sugar according to your personal preference.
    • Add some spice. Add a little heat to the meatloaf glaze by adding a tablespoon of Dijon mustard or a dash of chili sauce.
    • Amp up the tang. If you prefer a tangier glaze, adjust the ratio of ketchup to vinegar to suit your taste. Or, add a tablespoon of BBQ sauce.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do you put sauce on meatloaf before cooking?

No. I recommended adding the brown sugar glaze to the meatloaf towards the end of the cooking time to prevent it from burning. This allows the glaze to caramelize and meld with the meatloaf mixture, creating a delicious and moist meatloaf.

Can I use this glaze for other dishes besides meatloaf?

Absolutely! Save those leftovers! This tangy glaze can be used as a delicious topping for burgers, meatballs, meatloaf sandwiches or even grilled chicken. Get creative and experiment with different flavor combinations to suit your taste.

Can I use this glaze for turkey meatloaf?

Yes! This tangy meatloaf sauce will go great with a turkey loaf, or any homemade meatloaf recipe. It pairs just as well with meatloaf made from lean ground beef as it does with a meatloaf made with ground turkey.

How should I store leftover meatloaf with glaze?

Store any leftover meatloaf in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. You can also freeze individual slices of meatloaf for longer storage, ensuring that each slice is wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn.

Do I have to use a meatloaf pan?

You can use a loaf pan to bake your meatloaf in, or, for ultimate coverage, you can form the meatloaf mixture into a loaf and bake it on a rimmed baking sheet. This allows you to spread the meatloaf glaze over the entire surface area of the loaf for extra saucy flavor.

Total game changer. I will never make a Meatloaf (Lipton onion soup recipe) or Glaze it any other way. I did add the Mustard . And I only had Champange Vinegar so I used that. It was Amazing. You could add and change the profile of this recipe with other ingredients. But I would recommend you only do so if you don't have that certain item. And don't stray to far from the complexity of flavor of that item. You & your Family won't regret this comfort meal.
