Why This Recipe Works
This waffle breakfast sandwich recipe is maybe my favorite thing to eat for breakfast these days. Here's why:
- Easy to make. I made my waffles with a waffle iron, but you can just as easily use frozen waffles for these delicious sandwiches, making them super simple to whip up even on a busy weekday.
- Delicious. Smoked salmon, cream cheese, and onion are a classic combination that I never tire of. Adding in the egg and waffles makes this a deliciously decadent breakfast.
- Protein packed. Packed with protein from the eggs and salmon, these waffle breakfast sandwiches provide a satisfying and filling start to the day.
- Versatile. With endless possibilities for customization, including variations like adding cheddar cheese or sausage patties, this recipe can be tailored to suit whatever your tastebuds are craving.
Key Ingredients
Just 5 ingredients are needed for this waffle breakfast sandwich recipe:
- Waffles. Crispy golden waffles make the perfect, unexpected base for this sandwich. I made Belgian waffles in a waffle maker but you can also use store-bought frozen waffles to make these breakfast sandwiches.
- Smoked salmon. The rich and smoky flavor of smoked salmon adds a delicious punch of flavor to these sandwiches. Try to use the highest quality of smoked salmon you can find for the best-tasting sandwich.
- Cream cheese. Creamy, tangy, and oh-so-luxurious, cream cheese not only binds the ingredients together, and tastes delicious paired with the salmon. You have a few options here - you can opt for a plain cream cheese, or use a chive and onion version, which is what I did here.
- Eggs. Soft, fluffy, creamy scrambled eggs are what you're after here. Learn how to make the perfect creamy scrambled eggs for this sandwich here.
- Red onion. Thinly sliced red onion adds a touch of color and a hint of sharpness that cuts through the richness of the sandwich, balancing each bite perfectly.
How To Make Waffle Sandwiches With Salmon And Cream Cheese
This is such an easy recipe to throw together and looks super impressive. Here's how to make it:
- Prepare the waffles. Make your waffles with a waffle iron, or make them from frozen. You'll want them to be a nice golden brown color and slightly crunchy - enough to hold up the weight of the sandwich.
- Add the cream cheese. Begin assembling the sandwich by spreading a generous layer of cream cheese onto a toasted waffle.
- Add eggs. Spoon the fluffy scrambled eggs atop the cream cheese layer
- Layer on salmon. Delicately place slices of smoked salmon onto the eggs.
- Garnish With Onions: Finish off your waffle sandwich by topping it with thinly sliced red onions,
- Add a sandwich topper - or not. I had originally thought I'd use a second waffle for the top of the sandwich, but if you're using homemade Belgium waffles, you'll see how big that makes the sandwich! I chose to serve these open-faced, but if you want to make this a true "sandwich", add the remaining waffle to the top of the breakfast sandwich.
Variations And Substitutions
There are so many ways you can change up these delicious waffle sandwiches.
- Change up the cream cheese. As I mentioned, I used an onion and chive cream cheese here but you can try one of many different flavors. Plain cream cheese is always a classic, or try veggie cream cheese or another savory cream cheese for something different.
- Add some herbs. Fresh dill or chives would add a nice touch to these delicious sandwiches.
- Add some heat. Add a dash of hot sauce to spice things up.
- Swap out the salmon and cream cheese. For a more traditional breakfast sandwich, use a sausage patty or bacon instead of the smoked salmon and swap the cream cheese for a sharp cheddar cheese. You could even drizzle a touch of maple syrup here for a sweet touch.
- Change up the eggs. I like using scrambled eggs for this breakfast sandwich, but you could switch this up by making over easy or sunny-side-up eggs instead.
- Leftover Waffles: Don't let leftover waffles go to waste! Simply reheat them in the toaster or oven before assembling your sandwiches, ensuring that every bite is as fresh and delicious as the first.
Frequently Asked Questions
These sandwiches are best enjoyed fresh, but if you're looking to save a little bit of time, you can prepare some of the individual components ahead of time and assemble them just before serving. Simply store the waffles, smoked salmon, and cream cheese separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, toast the waffles lightly to warm them, make the scrambled eggs, and then assemble the sandwiches. I wouldn't make the scrambled eggs ahead of time as they will likely dry out a bit during the reheating process (and they don't take all that long to make anyway).
Absolutely! For a vegetarian twist, omit the smoked salmon and instead, add extra veggies like sliced tomatoes, cucumber, or avocado to create a delicious veggie breakfast option.
Feel free to experiment with different types of fish such as trout or lox to tailor the recipe to your personal preferences.
If you find yourself with leftover waffles, place them in an airtight container (I typically use a ziplock bag) and store them in the freezer. You can easily pop the frozen waffles in the toaster for a quick weekday breakfast. We often make extra waffles on purpose so that we can use them as an easy breakfast during the week.
